Your property could be an ideal breeding ground for cockroaches. There a multiple ways they can gain entry to buildings through cracks, crevices, vents, sewers, pipe drains, open doors and windows and goods brought into premises. Cockroaches are attracted by food, moisture and shelter, so the most effective way to prevent an infestation is to deny them access. Cockroaches are amazing scavengers, in an urban environment, cockroaches rely heavily on the food humans leave behind. Cockroaches are one of the most common pests in Australian households as they tend to favour conditions similar to those that humans create, Cockroaches tend to be nocturnal creatures. Cockroaches are closely associated with the human environment and have become pests worldwide.

Disease Transmission

Cockroaches are synonymous with filth and poor hygiene. Their feeding and nesting habits mean they can accumulate a range of pathogenic organisms which they transmit to food and surfaces where they feed and crawl, however, for the most part, cockroach diseases are caught by coming into contact with items that a cockroach has contaminated. It is important to discover a cockroach infestation as soon as possible so you can quickly take action to prevent them spreading and multiplying and minimise the health risks associated with this unhygienic insect.

COCKROACH CONTROL

Cockroach bait is one of the most common methods of cockroach control and is extremely effective in indoor locations such as kitchens (both commercial and residential), food handling and preparation areas, hotels and hospitals.

Cockroach baits come in three formats:

  • Liquid
  • Gel
  • Solid

The success of the treatment exploits the cannibalistic nature of cockroaches to help successfully remove an infestation. The bait is placed in strategic areas around a property where cockroaches are known to dwell. The toxins in the bait will not only affect the cockroach that consumes the bait, but also affects other roaches through secondary transmission. After a cockroach has fed they will often return to the nest where they will defecate. Any other cockroach which consumes the faeces, saliva, or carcass of the infected roach will also be affected by the cockroach bait. Infection can also occur through direct contact with the toxins from the bait dispersed within the cockroach nest. Essentially this creates a cycle of cockroaches becoming infected and passing it on to other roaches. Because of this, cockroach bait has a proven track record of successfully exterminating whole colonies of cockroaches.

Adults and nymphs find cracks and crevices in which they hide during the day, if numbers of cockroaches are seen during daylight, or if cockroaches are observed in non-food handling areas within a building such as bedrooms, it is likely that the building is supporting an enormous population
